Can CBD Ease Sciatica Pain?
I’ve fielded this question so many times, that I felt I need to let people know the answer.
First, Let's Start With: What is Sciatica?
Sciatica is the term given to the pain caused by irritation of the sciatic nerve. (see diagram below)
The general cause of of the pain is a compressed nerve in the lower spine. Usually the cause is a slipped disc or a herniated disc. The pain generally starts in the lower back area and runs down the back of your thigh producing a numbness or tingling (pins and needles) sensation.
Depending on the severity of the herniation or slipped disc, the person could be debilitated and left to only doing short walks around the house. Sometimes it’s tolerable and people just live with it and hope it goes away on it’s own.
Second, Let's Talk About Alleviation Methods
Many times people will self diagnose and self medicate in hopes that the pain will go away after a period of time.
With sciatic nerve pain, this generally isn’t a good option.
Sciatic nerve pain is a serious problem and sometimes it can be a chronic problem. Which opens the question, “What am I routinely doing that causes this?” Then tackle the problem before it begins.
But, as almost 99% of the population does, they reach for the OTC meds. Acetaminophen, ibuprofen, naproxen, etc. Taking dose after dose after dose, to manage their pain.
The problem here is that long term use of NSAID’s (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug) is that there is scientific evidence that they could induce other gastrointestinal issues.
The other methods are more physical in nature. Stretching (even though it’s painful), walking (you need to keep blood flowing), and physical therapy.
Third, Let's Talk About CBD and Sciatica
Cannabidiol (CBD) has been proven with success (anecdotally) to alleviate many physical pains. Joint issues, muscle issues, even nerve issues have all had some sort of relief with the use of CBD.
Sciatica, being a bone and nerve issue, can probably see some benefits from using CBD to alleviate the nerve pains.
There are 2 types of Sciatic Nerve pains. Neuropathic and nociceptive.
CBD WILL NOT cure any type of Sciatic Pain. The only course of action for complete pain relief is surgery.
However, CBD can provide much needed relief from sciatic pain. It’s helpful to get familiarized with the Endocannabinoid system and CBD usage.
CBD attaches to CB1 and CB2 receptors in the body and brings the body back in homeostasis (balance).
CBD isn’t a silver bullet for pain, but it can remove a good portion of the pain to allow you to enjoy your days better.
Fourth, How Do You Administer CBD?
If you’ve come this far, you’re ready to take the plunge and see how CBD can make sciatica pain or any general pain go away.
There are 3 ways administer CBD.
- Oral ingestion
- Gummy snacks
- Gel Capsules
- CBD Tinctures
- Hemp bud
Given the nature of sciatica pain, it’s a good choice to combine any topical method with any other method.
Suggest to start with a good topical right on the lower back area where the problem originates. This will provide immediate relief to the area.
Second, combine the topical with either a tincture (highly suggested) or a gel cap.
The tincture administration method is the 2nd quickest effectiveness. Within minutes you should feel some pain relief. This 1-2 punch of topical and tincture to the pain area could prove to be the best plan to alleviate your pain.
New to CBD usage?
As I’ve told all the people who ask me “how much should I take?”, I say the same thing over and over, “Start LOW and work your way up to find that sweet spot of milligram strength for your condition.”
